The reality
Why travel insurance matters
What does emergency medical travel insurance cover?
Emergency medical travel insurance covers hospital stays, surgeries, prescriptions, ambulance, and doctor visits when you're outside your home province. Since January 2020, OHIP no longer covers emergency medical care received outside Canada, and most other provincial plans reimburse only a small fraction of foreign rates. Hospital care in the US can run into the tens of thousands of dollars. The Emergency Medical plan covers up to $5,000,000 CAD on eligible plans — including COVID-19.
What's covered:
- Hospital stays and surgeries
- Doctor and specialist consultations
- Prescription medication
- Ambulance and emergency transport
- Dental emergencies
How it works when it’s tested. Picture a skier near Vernon, BC — catches an edge, hits a tree, traumatic internal injuries, an air ambulance off the mountain. Bills like these add up fast — roughly $6,300 to fly out, about $625 in doctors’ fees — and a provincial plan covers little of it. On an eligible plan, emergency medical like this is covered, every cent. That’s the whole point: the coverage shows up on the worst day, not the easy one. Illustrative scenario.
Trip Cancellation
Life happens. If you need to cancel your trip for a covered reason, the plan reimburses your prepaid, non-refundable costs — flights, hotels, tours, and more.
Covered reasons include:
- Illness or injury (you or immediate family)
- Natural disaster at destination
- Job loss or relocation
- Government travel advisories
Baggage & Personal Effects
Lost luggage? Stolen camera? The plan covers the replacement cost of your personal belongings, plus emergency essentials if your bags are delayed.
What's covered:
- Lost, stolen, or damaged luggage and personal items
- Emergency purchase of essentials if bags are delayed 12+ hours
- Travel documents (passport, visa) replacement costs
- Electronics, cameras, and personal valuables (subject to per-item limits)
Baggage Loss & Delay is an optional add-on. Coverage amounts, per-item limits, and the delay threshold are set out in your policy wording and shown when you add it to your quote.
Emergency Evacuation
Medical evacuations can cost over $100,000 out of pocket. The plan covers transport to the nearest adequate medical facility or repatriation home — by air ambulance if necessary.
What's covered:
- Air ambulance to nearest adequate medical facility
- Repatriation to Canada when medically stable
- Return of travelling companion if you're evacuated
- Return of mortal remains
Key fact: An air ambulance from Asia to Canada can cost $150,000–$250,000. From the US, a medical helicopter transfer alone can exceed $40,000. All of this is covered under your Emergency Medical policy — no separate evacuation plan required.

- Unstable pre-existing conditions — conditions that changed within the stability period (7–365 days depending on age)
- Extreme sports without addon — backcountry skiing, skydiving, wingsuit flying require Sports & Activities Coverage
- Travel against medical advice — if your doctor advised against travel
- Destinations under government advisories — "Avoid all travel" advisories at time of departure
- Elective or cosmetic procedures — non-emergency treatments performed abroad
