In short: Canada’s provincial health plans only cover residents and citizens. Visitors — and new arrivals in their waiting period — have no public coverage, so a single ER visit can cost thousands. Visitors to Canada insurance pays for emergency medical care, and the full plan we offer also meets the Super Visa requirement.

Who needs Visitors to Canada insurance?

Visitors & touristsFamily, friends, or business visitors from another country — no provincial coverage at all.
New permanent residentsIn the provincial-coverage waiting period (commonly up to 3 months) before public health begins.
Returning CanadiansCitizens who lived abroad and have lost provincial coverage while it re-qualifies.
Super Visa applicantsParents & grandparents who are legally required to carry it — see the Super Visa page.

Pre-existing conditions & stability

The full Visitors to Canada plan can cover stable pre-existing conditions — the required stability period before the policy date depends on age:

59 or underStable for 120 days before the policy date
60–69Stable for 180 days before the policy date
70 or olderStable for 365 days before the policy date

The budget Basic Visitors plan is more limited (for example, no trip cancellation and a lower prescription cap) — check how it treats pre-existing conditions before choosing it if there’s a health history. “Stable” means no changes to symptoms, medication, or treatment in the period before departure. Confirm the current stability rules in the policy wording — see the pre-existing conditions hub.

Buying for a Super Visa

If your parents or grandparents are applying for a Canadian Super Visa, they must carry private medical insurance from a Canadian insurer (or an IRCC-approved provider) valid for at least one year with a minimum of $100,000 coverage. The Visitors to Canada plans we offer are designed to meet this requirement.

How much does it cost?

There’s no fixed price. Premiums depend on the visitor’s age, the coverage amount, the length of stay, the deductible you choose, and any pre-existing conditions. The only way to see an exact figure is a quote.
