What does emergency medical travel insurance cover?

Emergency medical travel insurance covers hospital stays, surgeries, prescriptions, ambulance, and doctor visits when you're outside your home province. Your provincial health plan covers less than 10% of medical costs abroad — Ontario's OHIP pays just $50 for an ER visit, BC's MSP pays $28.90 for a doctor visit. A broken leg in the US can cost $50,000+. Our Emergency Medical Insurance covers up to $5,000,000 CAD — including COVID-19.

What's covered:

  • Hospital stays and surgeries
  • Doctor and specialist consultations
  • Prescription medication
  • Ambulance and emergency transport
  • Dental emergencies

Real claim: 39-year-old Bridgette was skiing in Vernon, BC when she crashed into a tree, suffering traumatic kidney injuries. Air ambulance fees: $6,296.60. Doctors' fees: $624.69. Her provincial plan didn't cover it. Amount paid by her Emergency Medical policy: $6,921.29.

Emergency Evacuation

Medical evacuations can cost over $100,000 out of pocket. Our coverage handles transport to the nearest adequate medical facility or repatriation home — by air ambulance if necessary.

What's covered:

  • Air ambulance to nearest adequate medical facility
  • Repatriation to Canada when medically stable
  • Return of travelling companion if you're evacuated
  • Return of mortal remains

Key fact: An air ambulance from Asia to Canada averages $150,000–$250,000. From the US, a helicopter transfer alone can exceed $40,000. All of this is covered under your Emergency Medical policy — no separate evacuation plan required.

  • Extreme sports without addon — backcountry skiing, skydiving, wingsuit flying require Sports & Activities Coverage
